CSE Review: Age Problem Sample 1

Question: Fred is 4 years older than Barney. Five years ago the sum of their ages was 48. How old are they now?

Represent the AGES NOW:

Barney’s age: x
Fred’s age: x + 4 (Because he is 4 years older than Barney)

Represent the AGES five years ago: 

Barney = x - 5
Fred = x + 4 - 5 = x -1

Represent the equation: 

Equation for the sum of their ages : x - 5 + x - 1 = 48
2x - 6 = 48
2x = 48 + 6
x = 54/2 or 27

ANSWER: 

Barney is now 27.
Fred = x + 4 = 27 + 4 = 31 now.

CHECK: 

5 years ago, Barney was 27-5 = 22
5 years ago, Fred was 31-5= 26
The sum of their ages was 22+26 = 48
